Café Gourmand, review.

In London on business, lunch-time fastly approaching, my colleague directs us through Soho, down a side street and we fall into his favourite lunch-time haunt, Café Gourmand. A tiny little French bistro where everything sold is home-made on site, a selection of mouth watering avant-garde cakes and pastries fill the window, with boards of hand made tarts and mini puff pies donning the counter.

The menu is perfect and simple, fast healthy wholesome choices such as omelette with your choice of fillings and a luscious green side salad, or one of the mini puff pies with velvety mash and salad or greens.

The cakes are incredibly creative, and the pastries leave me craving a visit to Paris, imagining its small streets and quirky Parisienne cafés.

Ahh the little French café. After reading the Rose Bakery books and visiting this place, I crave France with its romance, pastries, cigarettes and coffee.

My dining companion informs me that at night Café Gourmand transforms into a tiny candle-lit French haven. The wine selection is small and perfectly selected, and the staff all incredibly polite and authentically French (and beautiful!)

I order the omelette with ham and spinach, and my dining companion the pie with mash and salad. The food arrives briskly, hot and fresh. We sit at our tiny wooden table scoffing our humble lunches, listening to the poetic sound of the French waiters talking to each-other in their mother tongue. We notice the hoards of people shovelling down their Pret sandwiches across the road, and I wonder WHY?! For dessert we order a flat white coffee each, and are incredibly tempted by the mini dessert selection platter. Not on a week day!

I really can’t say enough about this place, it’s cute, friendly, authentic and straight up about its food. I will definitely be returning and bringing a friend, claiming I found it myself, my little Soho secret.
