Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, Covent Garden

Sticks ‘n‘ Sushi was voted best sushi restaurant in the foodie city of Copenhagen, but how would that success translate into London, where there are sushi joints on every corner? The answer is – really well, there’s a real sense of them working hard to bring something different to the market.

Sticks ‘n’ Sushi was started by two brothers, half Danish, half Japanese. Their large menu divides between yakitori (grilled meat on sticks), and sushi that includes other raw fish dishes such as ceviche. The menu is big- but the staff were really attentive and well informed, and spent time talking me through it– you can either order a set platter or pick and mix with the a la carte menu – which is more fun.

You can also add some x factor to your lunch by ordering a delicacy like avocado with caviar.

I loved everything I had – black cod sushi dragon rolls, grilled edamame beans and a deliciously rich goats cheese and cured ham yakitori, almost like a rich oriental fondue.  And to finish, oh my god, a liquorice crème brulee… That was the last of many highlights.

The restaurant is huge, dark, slick and relaxed, with well spaced out tables, one huge and perfect for a large group of friends, A cocktail bar and lounge area. Downstairs there are two separate kitchens where you can sit at the sushi or yakitori bar, depending if you fancy meat or fish.

I’m seriously impressed by Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, it has the balance just right of brilliant food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere with really great staff.
