Twisted Tapas at The Garden Café, Hove

Tapas in the cute Anns-well gardens in Hove after work on a Friday during a heatwave? Sold.

I was transported into garden party heaven just by strolling up the road and into the park, instant work to weekend.

You have to forgive the Garden Café for a few things – it is a park café after all, over-run in the day by screaming snotty children and pushchairs, and people nipping in and out with muddy feet for mini milks and mugs of tea.

This shows on the appearance of the café. Perhaps a little tidy up of the lost property and stacked chairs would have helped, maybe some fairy lights?
But what the hell- this was rough and ready tapas, rural, basic and actually very tasty.

Dying for a glass of something cold and fizzy I order a bottle of Cava – Sold out, we took a trip to Italy on the drinks front and sipped some Prosecco.
A basic but actually quite varied food menu including meat, fish and cheese boards, plus various classic tapas dishes such as patatas bravas and Spanish tortilla met expectations. A few interesting specials such as shredded pork also took our fancy.

The food was served very quickly- never sure if this is a good sign? But was perfect- tortilla served room temperature and patatas bravas identical to those eaten in Barcelona a few weeks ago in authentic terracotta crockery. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal sat outside in the open air, true Spanish dining style.

On asking for dessert, perhaps a crème Catalan? the response was only ice cream or cakes. A Nobbly Bobbly anyone?

But like I say, you have to forgive the Garden Café for some things…

Twisted Tapas is at The Garden Café in Hove every Friday evening throughout the Summer.
